How to Make Bird Suet Without Peanut Butter
- Soften (do not melt) the lard or vegetable shortening. This way the other dry ingredients can easily be mixed in.
- Add the softened lard/shortening mixture to a large pot and mix in the grated cheese.
- Add the rest of the ingredients one by one. Keep stirring while adding the ingredients to keep the mixture from becoming crumbly.
- Make or cut a small hole in the bottom of each yogurt cup. The hole needs to be big enough for the string to fit through.
- Add string to each cup and tie a few knots to keep it in place.
- Pour the mixture into the cups until they are filled. Place them into your freezer for a couple of hours.
- Remove the cups from the freezer once the suet has become hard. Let it sit for 2 to 3 minutes to turn slightly soft.
- Squeeze the suet out from each cup. Add to your bird feeder or hang them up on tree branches. Birds love this bird suet without peanut butter meal!

- You can halve or double the quantity of each ingredient according to your needs. Regardless of the desired quantity of the bird suet, you’ll need to make sure that you use 1 part of the fat of your choice with 2 parts of other ingredients. It means you’ll need 1 cup of fat if the other ingredients total to 2 cups collectively.
- You can store the additional bird suet in your refrigerator once it’s frozen for 8 to 10 days. The mixture can also be stored in the freezer for a month. Make sure that you label the container with the date.
- This recipe is best suited for the winter season as it will maintain both shape and freshness in cold weather. You can also make it during the summer months but in less quantity so that it doesn’t turn rancid.
- You can also involve your children in this activity! Not only will kids have fun making a treat for birds, but they will also further their skills in patience, observation skills, and attention.
